Participation in the GIS-in-Central-Asia Conference

The GIS-in-Central-Asia conference continued the long tradition of GISCA conferences and in 2022 was again organized in the format of regional centers with several nodes. On-site presentations were organized by participating centers during coordinated sessions. The entire conference was broadcast online from May 23 to May 27.

Deputy Director Azizov Eldar Alikovich “Creation of an electronic cartographic database of agricultural lands in the lower reaches of the Syrdarya River to solve land use problems” made a report in English.

The object of research is agricultural land along the Syrdarya River in the Kyzylorda region of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Currently, to study the problems of agriculture and water use, the most relevant and promising is the use of methods of remote sensing of the earth, methods of statistical analysis, as well as methods of analyzing digital images of the terrain. The initial data for these studies were the existing topographic maps of the region, as well as aerial photographs.

The Syrdarya River basin is one of the economically important facilities that provides water resources to Central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and has a significant impact on the development of the agricultural sector of these countries. The total length of the river from the sources of the Naryn is 3019 km, and the basin area is 219 sq.km. A significant part of the river’s resources is located on the territory of Kyrgyzstan – 74%, Kazakhstan accounts for only 9% of its total resource, where the river flows into the Aral Sea.

The topic is relevant, since within Kazakhstan the Syrdarya remains the main waterway providing water resources to the population and many sectors of the national economy, including agriculture.

Also, employees of the digital mapping department took an active part in the sessions – the head of the Tursyngazy group Diana Seitkozhakyzy, cartographer engineer Tarybayeva Aigerim Serikkyzy.
